After much hype, Prabal Gurung launched his first print ad ever for his Spring/Summer 2014 Collection. They say a picture is worth a thousand words but this image has left the fashion world speechless! I had an opportunity to visit Prabal Gurung's showroom several months ago and since then I have reason to believe that this young designer is a force to be reckoned with. With his clean minimal sportswear inspired collection, Prabal is the next Asian-American designer to debut along the likes of Alexander Wang and Jason Wu. Definitely a designer to watch out for in 2014!
With New York Fashion Week landing in the city next week, many are wondering what's in store for Fall/Winter 2014. While scrolling my Facebook newsfeed this morning, I came across a post from forecasting giant, The Doneger Group stating "Atletic influences are cementing style direction." Sportswear! Of course! Today more than ever, the world is intrigued by the health movement. From the American Heart Association's RED products to Diabetes awareness to the trendiness of stores such as Whole Foods and Lululemon, it seems people are hooked on healthy! It only makes sense that this trend is transcending into fashion and now sportswear is seen primarily in many prefall collections. What can we expect from this trend? Think 1980s Jane Fonda aerobics trend meets the modern working woman. Lots of primary colors in boxy athletic shapes! Lightweight fabrics and comfortable linens. It's all about comfort and versatility! I think this is a trend we'll see heavily translated in the NYFW FW14 collections. We have a week to wait and see how designers will incorporate these ideas but in the meantime let's get physical!
New Zealand born singer Lorde made quite the splash at the Grammys Sunday with her bold nail art - or lack thereof. Whether or not she was trying to start a movement is unknown but I think this reflects a moving away from the extravagant nail art trend of recent years. Women are departing from their polka dot Hello Kitty nails and connecting with more subdued classic looks.
The Winter vortex in New York City right now has got me daydreaming of golden sand and margaritas at my desk for weeks now. It seems you can't go anywhere without feeling like you've stepped out into an arctic blizzard. Yet, the recent unveiling of pre-fall collections have got me excited for next Fall/Winter, especially that of Balenciaga! Alexander Wang has been at Balenciaga for over a year now and after seeing his pre-fall collection, I believe he is at his best. The new gravity-defying shapes and silhouettes tell a significant story about the future of fashion! The collection is chock-full of some new daring ideas, which I think is going to inspire other designers to take more risks in moving fashion forward. Since the millenium, we've been seeing lots of nostalgia on the runways and I believe Wang's new ideas could be a step in the right direction to get fashion moving again! I can't wait to give an update after the Main FW14 show!
