After much hype, Prabal Gurung launched his first print ad ever for his Spring/Summer 2014 Collection. They say a picture is worth a thousand words but this image has left the fashion world speechless! I had an opportunity to visit Prabal Gurung's showroom several months ago and since then I have reason to believe that this young designer is a force to be reckoned with. With his clean minimal sportswear inspired collection, Prabal is the next Asian-American designer to debut along the likes of Alexander Wang and Jason Wu. Definitely a designer to watch out for in 2014!
With New York Fashion Week landing in the city next week, many are wondering what's in store for Fall/Winter 2014. While scrolling my Facebook newsfeed this morning, I came across a post from forecasting giant, The Doneger Group stating "Atletic influences are cementing style direction." Sportswear! Of course! Today more than ever, the world is intrigued by the health movement. From the American Heart Association's RED products to Diabetes awareness to the trendiness of stores such as Whole Foods and Lululemon, it seems people are hooked on healthy! It only makes sense that this trend is transcending into fashion and now sportswear is seen primarily in many prefall collections. What can we expect from this trend? Think 1980s Jane Fonda aerobics trend meets the modern working woman. Lots of primary colors in boxy athletic shapes! Lightweight fabrics and comfortable linens. It's all about comfort and versatility! I think this is a trend we'll see heavily translated in the NYFW FW14 collections. We have a week to wait and see how designers will incorporate these ideas but in the meantime let's get physical!
New Zealand born singer Lorde made quite the splash at the Grammys Sunday with her bold nail art - or lack thereof. Whether or not she was trying to start a movement is unknown but I think this reflects a moving away from the extravagant nail art trend of recent years. Women are departing from their polka dot Hello Kitty nails and connecting with more subdued classic looks.
The Winter vortex in New York City right now has got me daydreaming of golden sand and margaritas at my desk for weeks now. It seems you can't go anywhere without feeling like you've stepped out into an arctic blizzard. Yet, the recent unveiling of pre-fall collections have got me excited for next Fall/Winter, especially that of Balenciaga! Alexander Wang has been at Balenciaga for over a year now and after seeing his pre-fall collection, I believe he is at his best. The new gravity-defying shapes and silhouettes tell a significant story about the future of fashion! The collection is chock-full of some new daring ideas, which I think is going to inspire other designers to take more risks in moving fashion forward. Since the millenium, we've been seeing lots of nostalgia on the runways and I believe Wang's new ideas could be a step in the right direction to get fashion moving again! I can't wait to give an update after the Main FW14 show!
Crystal, Maybach, Tigers on a gold leash. Scandanavian singer Lorde pokes fun at hip hop culture in her platinum hit, "Royals." The opulence of hip hop culture has come under fire in the 2000s, spurring hip hop to be the target of jokes and criticism. But recently, a deeper appreciation of hip hop fashion of the past has been fondly welcomed in street style in New York and around the world. Fashion bloggers and icons alike are embracing trends inspired by hip hop culture nostalgia. In the early 1970s as hip hop music emerged, hip hop artists latched onto sportswear trends and adapted them into their unique style. Sneakers, baseball caps, and sports attire comprised the original uniform for hip hop culture. Today, we are seeing style relate back to this simplistic approach. High tops, snapbacks, jerseys, and varsity jackets appear on the pages of nearly every fashion blog, magazine, and LIM student. The trend, adapted for today's fashionista, demonstrates society's desire to relate back to a more simplistic time, where getting dressed in the morning didn't have to require so much thought.
In early 90s hip hop culture, artists embraced a silhouette far from that's of the 2000s. Oversized clothing captivated nearly everyone, much unlike the " so tight you can see my bones" trend of the Millennia. Girls swam in oversized track pants while men rocked three sizes too big jerseys. How can one forget the oversize low jeans men wore and how they basically begged us to hand them a belt? Today, harem pants and wide leg styles are taking the fashion world by storm. Gone are the days of too tight jeans and unbreathable tube tops. This dramatic turn means women are no longer drawn into such oversexualized images of how a woman should look, making a statement about how differently we wish to be viewed.
The nostalgia of hip hop fashion of the past is making waves in how we wish to dress today. Sportswear and sneakers beg us for more simplistic fashions while our technology-obsessed society is becoming more increasingly complicated. Oversized clothing ask that we begin to look at ourselves differently and question society's sexuality. Ultimately, hip hop trends today point out that opulence and audacity aren't the only option.

Top Fall Trends From Vogue's September Issue (Parts 4 & 5)
3:16 PMHey so it has been quite a few days since I last posted about our top five fall trends, I've been busy with school and of course New York Fashion Week. So I figured I'd jump on here and finish up my trend report so I can start discussing my experience at Fashion Week and my review of the Malan Breton show which I will get to tomorrow! But for today we have our last two and possibly my favorite two top fall trends: Jumpsuits and Trenchcoats!
Jumpsuits were all over the September Vogue issue! I cannot stress how much I love the jumpsuit and how I saw them absolutely everywhere in London! I was so obsessed I went on a personal manhunt to find the perfect one upon my return to the States. Besides that, jumpsuits are just so versatile and come in so many different colors, prints, and cuts. Just a full outfit in a snap (or zipper?). They can be casual, dressy, daring or just straight up over the top (like Solange's above!). What even better? They tie in perfectly with my 1970's trend analysis! The first time I ever wore my favorite new wide leg jumpsuit, a woman my mother's age approached me at work exclaiming that she had almost an identical one in the 70s, just going to show that this 70s revival is in full swing (think harem pants and platform sneakers!).
The best thing about jumpsuits is that you can dress them up or down. I love to keep it simple with a classics black jumpsuit with gold accessories for a very glam look or sometimes a printed one with which I'll go easy on the accessories. They look super cute with flats or some chunky heels. Definitely a versatile piece to add to your wardrobe for mornings when you're in a rush and just need a quick outfit to zip up and go!
Next, trenchcoats. Where do I even begin? Trenchcoats are another classic piece that are so versatile and go with basically anything. Perfect for rainy days or nights out in the city, a trenchcoat can take you anywhere. While you certainly don't need to splurge on a Burberry trench, do make sure it is of good quality to withstand weathering. Also, you don't have to stick with classic beige! Switch it up with a black trench for a military inspired look or even go bold with a printed one. Michael Kors and of course Burberry showcased their classic trenches in the September issue and with some leather accents, Kors made them look more modern than ever! Just another reminder that classics absolutely do not have to be boring!

Top Trends from Vogue's September Issue (Part 3)
9:28 AMToday's exciting Fall trend involves fun and funky Fall footwear. We've already seen and discussed Fall's new "it" color and accessories trend and seen how colors are affecting Fall fashion. Today's discussion is all about shapes, primarily the chunky heel. The chunky heel was been gaining momentum since last year's Jeffrey Campbell obsession. I must admit, the chunky heel was not my cup of tea for a while and Campbell's Lita made be scratch my head. I eventually caved and tried on a pair and instantaneously I was a woman obsessed. The chunky heel was an easy way to change the entire look of every outfit and made even the flowiest dresses suddenly edgier. This Fall we are seeing other designer's catch on to Campbell's bandwagon. Just as the chunky heel bootie evolved from the wedge, we are seeing the chunky heel evolve into pumps and even sneakers with the new flatform trend. Chanel jumps on the bandwagon with a classy black patent bootie with the chunkiest of heels while we see Michelle Williams modeling Louis Vuitton's chunky pump as a departure from the platform wedge of last year. We see the trend continue to adapt into other designer's collections as well including Prada, Steve Madden, and countless others, becoming one of the easiest trends to spot in the issue.
